Occasionally we all get aches and pains in our necks. On the whole though, a neck injury is often a minor ailment and will heal by itself over a number of days. However, if it doesn’t (or you’re in a great deal of pain) you’ll need to make an appointment with your doctor.

If you spend a lot of time sat at a desk, then it’s important that your computer is at the right level and you’re not sitting hunched over. Slouching and cradling your phone can also cause your neck to become sore, so try to train yourself to stop doing this if you can.
Cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis) is caused by the wear and tear of the vertebrae and discs in your neck. It usually affects people over the age of thirty and can be treated by exercising your neck and physiotherapy. In some cases, it can develop into the more serious conditions – cervical radiculopathy and cervical myelopathy.
A pinched nerve
If there is compression on a nerve root by the top of your spine, it can cause neck pain. A pinched nerve (cervical radiculopathy) is often the result of a disc splitting and the gel inside it touching a nerve.
When you’re feeling stressed or anxious you can tense your neck without realising what you’re doing. Doing this for prolonged periods can cause neck pain.
If you’re involved in a car accident then you may suffer from whiplash afterwards, caused by the sudden movement of your head forwards, backwards or sideways at impact. Spraining your neck is never pleasant and can result in damage to the discs in your spine and/or injury to your joints.
